When setting out to write a business document, the first thing you should ask yourself is"what is my reason for writing this document?" Business writing aims to serve many purposes, such as:
- Explain or justify actions
- Convey information
- Influence the reader
- Deliver good or bad news
- Request action
Keep your purpose in mind as you begin writing. Many writers, in attending to the mundane tasks of preparing a document, lost track of their purpose. To help you stay on course, jot your purpose down at the beginning of your draft as a reminder and refer back to it as you proceed.
